ADAPT is helping Families strengthen their Neighborhoods

In August 2012, ADAPT provided a Neighborhood Watch/Block Association Training to parents in the Strengthening Families of Essex (SFOE) program. Parents learned ways to unite with neighbors to advocate for their neighborhood and the entire community. They also learned about ADAPT and how we can help improve their communities by minimizing underage drinking and drug use in the entire County.

Topics discussed included: the pro’s for creating a block association; the steps to take to create one; who to contact if there are problems in your neighborhood; tips on how to advocate for yourself and your community; and, ways that ADAPT can support the neighborhood and any block associations.

Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA) Training

In June 2012, ADAPT held a two-day training in Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA). The training was organized by the California-based organization Youth Leadership Institute (YLI), which offers training, technical assistance, research, and evaluation services to support and build the capacity of prevention organizations of all sizes and areas of focus.

The training was led by Eric Rowles, President/CEO of Leading to Change, the training taught ADAPT Coalition members the essential skills and tools needed to organize residents of Essex County to decrease you access to alcohol. CMCA employs a holistic approach to reducing underage drinking and provided our members with concrete strategies we can implement immediately to help our communities.

Eric is a nationally respected trainer/motivational speaker who energized and motivated the Coalition members who attended the training. “Eric’s energy was contagious and had every member in attendance active and ready to make a difference in our community,” said Joel Torres, ADAPT Coordinator.

Eric stated, “It was a pleasure working with Joel, Jackie, and the rest of the Essex County Coalition in introducing the CMCA Training Series to the community heroes and change activists in Essex County! It’s not often that you bring the energy of a new team of practitioners, the proven success and history of an established coalition, and the dedication and commitment of multiple agencies for a unified cause. As the national trainer of the CMCA curriculum, the Youth Leadership Institute is pleased to work with ADAPT in continuing their progressive and cutting edge work in Essex County!”
